SHS COUNSELOR’S CORNER
- Fall Day of Testing is coming on October 16th. On that day 9th grade students will take the PSAT 8/9 test. 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT/NMSQT exam.
The PSAT is administered digitally so students must bring their school-issued Chromebook fully charged on that day. They’ll also need to bring a charger with them. Results from these tests provide insights into your child’s strengths, along with areas they can work on while still in high school. Whether your child is thinking about attending a two- or four-year college, a job training program, or isn’t sure what they want to do after high school, the PSAT can help make their career goals and postsecondary path clearer. Taking the PSAT also helps students prepare for the SAT and helps them find out what AP courses they might be ready to take.
On this day, many of our 12th graders will be shuttled to Ben Barber to take the TSI, the college readiness test. Others will participate in a senior activity here at Summit. Some might choose to take a college day (which must be arranged with the college and their AP ahead of time).
- Level change forms are now available in the counseling center. A level change form allows a student to request to move INTO or OUT OF an advanced class. For example, a student who feels like they aren’t challenged in their current on-level class might choose to request to move to an advanced class OR a student who is struggling to keep up in an advanced class might want to request to move to an on-level class. These forms have a part for student, parent, and teacher to complete and are due in the counseling center by Thursday, September 19th. Turning in the form does not guarantee that the class will be changed, but if the request is approved, changes will be made during the first week of the second six weeks once grades have posted.
- Our GO Center in the library is open and ready to help seniors with their plans for next year. GO Center reps are available Monday-Friday to help students with college searches, college applications, scholarships, and preparation for the completion of FAFSA (which opens officially December 1st). Seniors, stop by the GO Center, meet our mentors, and begin work on your next steps.
- Counselors are currently meeting with seniors to review transcripts and graduation requirements and talk about next steps and how we can support students. These meetings will take place through September and October. We’re loving meeting with your students and helping them plan for their exciting next steps!
- Please follow the NEW Summit counseling office INSTAGRAM at @shsjagcounseling. Ms. Dewberry, our amazing new counselor, is posting valuable college, career, and scholarship information here.
